Under 15s Match Report by Phil Hargreaves - Wk 8
Match Report: Rochdale U15s V Leigh U15s
Sunday 26 October 2014

Following a Euphoric win in the Blacksticks Lancashire Cup, Rochdale U15s entertained Leigh U15s, a team which Rochdale had never defeated. On a blustery autumn morning, with the clocks going back 1 hour, Rochdale decided to go forward and literally blew the opposition away.

Rochdale played the first half into a strong wind and within minutes, the tall second row forward Kyle Dixon burst through the Leigh defence and scored under the posts, unfortunately fullback Jonni Allen missed the conversion 5-0 to the home side. Within minutes of the restart Captain Nico Rizelli went on one of his characteristic charges and again scored close to the posts, Allen converted 12-0 to Rochdale.

Good forward play resulted in William Armour ably supported by Ryan Green, scoring his first try for his team and set the marker for twin brother and fellow prop John Armour to emulate in the future. Unfortunately the conversion was missed 17-0 to Rochdale. Debutant Steven Broad who had only just joined the team, showed his strength and after bursting through the Leigh defence he rounded the Leigh winger to score under the posts, the conversion attempt hit the cross bar 22-0 to Rochdale. This seemed to spark Leigh into action and on the stroke of half time Leigh scored under the posts and converted the kick, Half Time score 22-7 Rochdale.

The Rochdale flankers Casey Brown and Bradley Fox were at every breakdown and from a ruck, Fox appeared with the ball and burst through fending off the opposition to score under the posts. A change of kicker, saw fly half Andy Dean convert, 29-7 to Rochdale.

Leigh countered and strong forward play with rolling mauls resulted in Leigh scoring their second try, the conversion was missed 29 -12 to Rochdale. A blood injury to Fox meant that Rochdale had to re shuffle and Nico Rizelli went to centre and paired up with fellow centre Harvey Mann who had just put in a tremendous tackle but was adjudged to have spear tackled his man and Leigh was given a penalty.

Rizelli and Fox both very quickly ran up their brace of tries, both converted by fly half Dean, score 43-12 to Rochdale. Leigh were now capitulating, Jordan Clarke and Brandon Marshall were counter rucking at ease and winning lots of ball for Danni Mammood to feed his pacey wingers Dylan Keay and Curtis Ward, however it was left to flanker Casey Brown to wrap things up, with a jinking run from the half way line, he weaved his way through the opposition to score under the posts, again Dean converted and the referee brought the game to a close Rochdale 50 Leigh 12.

A great all round performance by the team, praised by opposition coaches and the spectators. Thanks to the officials Dan O’Connell and Howard Warburton for refereeing, however the latter needs a new watch, only arriving at half time.
