Under 15s Match Report by Phil Hargreaves - Wk 7
RRUFC U15s Match Report Sunday 19th October 2014
Rochdale v Rossendale

Rochdale were drawn at home, in this 2nd Blacksticks Blue Lancashire match of the season, against opponents and local rivals Rossendale.

For the second game running Rochdale started the game with only 14 players, a late withdrawal from Ryan Green due to illness meant that Rochdale would have to draw on all their resources to overcome the task ahead of them and “boy o boy” they did not disappoint the home supporters.

Rochdale began the game brightly and despite kicking into a strong wind, Rochdale made the early headway. Front row props Will & John Armour, were well supported by hooker Jordan Clarke and soon got the better of their opposite numbers and gave the lively Rochdale backs plenty of early ball. Unfortunately ex Rochdale player and now Captain of the Rossendale team managed to break free and opened up the Rochdale defence and evaded a desperate tackle from Jonni Allen to score out wide, he also missed the conversion 0-5 to the away team.

The Rochdale captain Nico Rizzelli was having none of it and rallied his troops on the offensive. Flankers Casey Brown and Bradley Fox attacked the opposition and created a lovely pass to Rizzelli who burst through the Rossendale defence, fending off all on comers to score out wide. Unfortunately fly half Andrew Dean missed the conversion 5-5.

Rochdale had their tails up and despite being a man down, was playing some lovely open rugby. Second row forwards Kyle Dixon and Brandon Marshall were now forcing the pace and again Bradley Fox came through the crowd and forced his way over to score a great try, which Dean duly despatched and Rochdale went in at half time 12-5 in front.

Rochdale now had the wind behind and kicked off, for Rossendale to counter and following several pick and goes forced themselves over the line to score under the posts. Willets converted, score 12-12. Rossendale committed several high tackles and eventually the offender was yellow carded and from the resulting penalty Jonni Allen slotted the penalty between the sticks 15-12 to the home side, unfortunately skipper Rizzelli had to leave the field of play and Rochdale were now down to 13 players, having no replacement on the bench.

Rossendale came back again and despite valiant tackling from Harvey Mann and Harry Stockton Smith, Rossendale went over, but Willets missed the conversion 15-17 to Rossendale. 5 minutes remained and the determination of the valiant 13 and the “Never say Die “attitude gave Rochdale the impetus for one last effort. Jonni Allen kicked off and Dylan Keay and Danni Mammood gave chase and closed the opposition down quickly, Rossendale offended in the ruck and Rochdale was awarded another penalty. Up stepped fullback Allen and as “Cool as a Cucumber” struck the ball between the sticks, Rochdale led 18-17

Minutes left and Rossendale offended again and Allen tapped the ball and kicked into touch, game over and a magnificent display for the 13 man team to have won. Rochdale coaches could not praise their team enough, they played for the badge and even the away supporters congratulated them on a well deserved victory 18-17
